Project 1- Footprint Introduction

 

Project Description:

The Introduction Foot Art Project is a creative “get-to-know-you” activity where students trace and cut out an outline of their foot and decorate it using drawings, magazine cutouts, stickers, and other materials that represent their personality, interests, and identity. This visual collage allows students to share who they are in a fun, artistic way and serves as a great icebreaker for the beginning of the school year. Each decorated foot becomes a unique symbol of the student’s journey, helping build classroom community and encouraging self-expression.

Extension Activity:

After completing their foot art, students will participate in a “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” gallery walk. Each student will write a short paragraph explaining the symbols or images they included and why they chose them. Then, students will take turns walking around the classroom to view each other’s “feet” and read their explanations. As a follow-up, pair students together and have them find at least two things they have in common based on their foot art. This activity promotes connection, empathy, and active listening while reinforcing classroom culture and communication skills.

  Van Gogh Inspired Landscape Collage Project Description: This lesson was focused on integrating art and learning about Vincent Van Gogh. We explored his early works, his artistic influences, his distinct style, and his life, including the fact that he only sold one painting during his lifetime. We also studied his famous  Starry Night  painting, watching a short video to gather more insights about him and his work. Afterward, we created our own version of  Starry Night . We started by gluing multiple pieces of tissue paper onto large construction paper (18" x 24"). Once the paper was covered, we added a layer of Modge Podge to seal everything together. Then, we picked a landscape of our choice and drew it on black construction paper before cutting it out and gluing it to the bottom of the tissue paper background.  Watercolors  Activity Description: In this activity, students learned four different techniques for painting with watercolors. We began by studying a watercolor artist and how they became famous for their unique style. Then, as a class, we were guided through drawing the basic elements of a still life: the walls and floor, and a table with a flower vase on it. Once the drawing was complete, we traced over all of our pencil lines with a black Sharpie. This step ensured that our watercolor paint wouldn’t stray outside of the outlined areas. Finally, students began painting their still life, incorporating at least three of the watercolor techniques they had learned earlier in the lesson.
