Van Gogh Inspired Landscape Collage
Project Description:
This lesson was focused on integrating art and learning about Vincent Van Gogh. We explored his early works, his artistic influences, his distinct style, and his life, including the fact that he only sold one painting during his lifetime. We also studied his famous Starry Night painting, watching a short video to gather more insights about him and his work.
Afterward, we created our own version of Starry Night. We started by gluing multiple pieces of tissue paper onto large construction paper (18" x 24"). Once the paper was covered, we added a layer of Modge Podge to seal everything together. Then, we picked a landscape of our choice and drew it on black construction paper before cutting it out and gluing it to the bottom of the tissue paper background. To add even more details, we used oil pastels. I chose to do a beach scene with palm trees and a dolphin because I love warm places, and I thought the bright sunset colors would look great against the black background.
Extension Activity:
Collaborative Landscape Mural:
For an extension activity, students could work together to create a large mural that represents our school. Each student would be responsible for covering a specific section of the mural using tissue paper of any color they choose. Afterward, they would move to another section to add details using oil pastels. As a class, we would combine all the pieces to form a cohesive landscape, highlighting something unique about our school, like a favorite spot on campus or a shared memory. This collaborative project would allow us to work together as a class to create a beautiful artwork that could be proudly displayed in the school.
