Dot day!
Project Description:
After reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, we did an art activity that encouraged students to "make their mark" just like Vashti. Each student got to create their own unique dot using a coffee filter as the base. They could cut their filter into any shape they wanted like a circle, snowflake, or heart. We used white crayons and oil pastels to add designs, then went over them with watercolors and washable markers to see the colors blend and pop. It was a really creative and fun way for students to express themselves, and it tied perfectly into the message of the book.
Extension Activity:
Dot Gallery Walk:
Once all the dots are finished, turn the classroom into a mini art gallery! Hang each student’s dot artwork around the room and have students do a gallery walk with a sticky note or clipboard. As they walk around, they can write a compliment or a comment about what they notice in their classmates' artwork. This activity promotes positive feedback, builds confidence, and reinforces the idea that everyone's mark is unique and valuable.
